More Than Words - What These Fonts Say About This Blog

Selecting the right font is essential when designing with text. Whether it’s a brochure, a news article or in this case, a blog, the mood and identity of the platform is shaped and communicated through typeface selection. The two fonts used throughout this blog have been carefully and thoughtfully chosen to create identity and ‘vibe.’

1. Heading Font

The typeface chosen for the headings was the display font, Anton. This is a strong, bold, sans-serif font, with block letters and Anton was selected for these very reasons. The typeface of the headings needs to be bold and eye-catching, as to draw the reader in to view the content of the blog (Design School, n.d.). This particular font was selected as it has similar elements to the typeface used throughout the BuzzFeed website- being bold block letters as well that contributes to a strong visual hierarchy. Anton however, does vary from the online, media platform’s heading fonts, as the glyphs are slightly wider and bolder, and there is less variation between their heights. Straying from using the identical typeface of BuzzFeed was intentional, as many other components emulate the company, to demonstrate individuality this heading font was selected.

2. Body Font

Lighter, sans-serif fonts compliment bold, display fonts as they are contrasting, so therefore create balance on the page. Likewise to the heading font, DIN next light was chosen as it has similar characteristics to BuzzFeed’s body font. It is light-weight and minimalistic, making it clear and legible. Furthermore, sans-serif fonts create a contemporary style, making the blog feel modern and new (Design School, n.d.).
