5 Reasons Why This Blog Theme Was Chosen

The theme “This Just In” was chosen for a number of reasons and adjusted to suit my needs and requirements for the blog. Here are the top 5 reasons why this theme was selected.

1. Visual Hierarchy

Visual Hierarchy is clearly demonstrated using this blog theme. The blog is broken down into a grid, and all components fit within this to ensure consistency (Turner, 2016). With the banner showcasing my name ‘Emma Holmes’ the reader is drawn down the page. The large images of the blog posts grab the attention of the reader and encourage them to continue viewing the page, in addition to the bold, large typeface used.

2. Clear and Legible

The theme provides a clear and logical blog format that can be recognised as a news and entertainment site and is clearly able to be recognised as showcasing the BuzzFeed identity. The grid structure allows for effective use of white space to allow the reader to ‘breathe’ and feel comfortable rather than cluttered and overwhelmed. Furthermore, this structure allowed for posts in the form of lists, which are an effective and 'to the point' form of communication.

3. Customisable

The theme is customisable to communicate individual style to suit the audience. The theme “This Just In” was a blog theme for news and current affairs issues. When selecting it, key elements were available that could be applied to emulate BuzzFeed’s identity. These components included ‘post gallery’ below the banner and navigation bar, which is also featured on BuzzFeed’s site. Furthermore, elements such as the vertically listing the latest blog posts with a preview of the article and the main image could also be customised to communicate style and BuzzFeed’s identity to the audience.

4. modern and contemporary

Likewise to being clear and legible, the white space, colour scheme and structure is modern and has a contemporary feel (Turner, 2016).

5. Shows Brand and Identity

For the reasons above, this theme provides the opportunity to showcase personal brand and demonstrates my abilities to visually communicate within specified brand guidelines and that I can apply practical design and blogging skills to real practice.
